In Memory of Vidal Sassoon
An industry legend passed peacefully in his California home yesterday as millions of fans all over the world erupted on facebook and twitter with expressions of their sadness, condolences to his family, and stories of how the late and great Sassoon had made such an impression on their lives. A fitting tribute to the man who "changed the world with a pair of scissors," and who built his empire from humble beginnings through a combination of hard work, unique talent, and brilliant vision. Sassoon, famous for the revolutionary Mia Farrow haircut, was known and renowned throughout the world for being the authority on cutting edge techniques and styles. A trendsetter and icon, the news of his death spread like wildfire through James Joseph Salon yesterday with stylists sharing with one another in his memory the impact he had made on their lives and the direction they chose in their careers. Most stylists, having Vidal Sassoon Academy training, will be forever grateful for the role he played in their decision to follow this path and the invaluable teaching they recieved in courses structered even to this day in the ABC's of cutting and cutting as was pioneered by Sassoon himself. To the entire Sassoon family, our condolences for your loss, and our gratitude for sharing with us a remarkable man who will forever be remembered and revered in our industry. Rest easy, Vidal Sassoon.

HAIRRAISING for Children's Hospital Boston!
Fresh cuts and all for charity on Sunday April 29, 2012 at James Joseph Salon! Thanks to all our stylists, assistants, receptionists and especially our amazing clients who came out to support this great cause. Highlights of the day included a visit by Lulu, UK pop star who sang the smash hit "To Sir With Love," clients Chris and Erin Hall donating $250.00 after a visit with Stylist Mary Chheng, and a very special client who not only chopped her locks for charity but who was donating her hair as well. Over $2,500 was raised, all of which goes to Children's Hospital Boston in support of all of the wonderful things that they do. Looking forward to next year's HAIRRAISING efforts already!

Ombres Away!
Ombre hair. Love it or hate it, what we once thought was a passing phase seems to be here to stay. Evolving looks of ombre are making their mark again with a new, lightened look for summer with a softer brownish blonde base and ombre'd ends of golden glory. Ombre hair is making it's mark in a major way, and celebrities like Lauren Conrad, Rachel Bilson, Sienna Miller and Drew Barrymore can't get enough. What we love even more is seeing one of our favorite fashion bloggers - Rumi, of the Fashion Toast, rockin' an ombre look that's ta dye for! So if you thought you missed your chance at this gorgeous, fun and show stopping look - you're wrong. Ombre on sistah!

Top Knots.
At James Joseph Salon we're always looking at new ways to style hair for that on the go girl. Loose messy buns are not just for the gym anymore, and as evidenced by the looks above, can be a classy solution for getting the hair up and out of your face for the day. Low or high, we love the appearance of a knotted bulb of hair. For a hair how to, James Joseph stylist Kathleen Doe says start with unwashed hair and a texturizing spray like oribe dry. Spray texturizer at the root for volume and pull hair back into an unkept messy bun and tie loosely with a clear elastic. Pull some pieces through around the hairline and there you have it - a red carpet ready look for any day of the week.

Close Crops!
Just in time for Spring - some of our favorite short cuts on celebrities and mortals alike. It takes a confident woman to rock a short haircut and we recommend finishing the look with some fierce makeup and definitely some severe accessories. Our Salon Manager, Lindsey Berry, always thought that her short cuts were a sentence to clean, subdued makeup and a life of no earrings but she has learned that it is actually quite the opposite. "If you're going to stand out with a short haircut, push the limits in other areas as well" she says. Nothing brings more attention to a strong jawline and a beautiful close crop then a package to match. Tired of blowdrying your hair for an hour in the a.m.? Want a more low maintenance look like celebrities Michelle Williams, and in her day, Rihanna? Check out some of these looks above and make your appointment to shed that winter bulk with a new fresh cut. You'll be turning heads on every street in no time. Work it out ladies!

Spring has sprung in Boston, MA and at James Joseph Salon we love to celebrate a new season by transforming a color from dull to deluxe. Salon Coordinator Samantha was in need of an update and stylist Mary Chheng came to the rescue giving her beautiful blonde highlights that brighten Samantha's look and give her color a POP! Like a flower blossoming after the winter - it's that time of the year to bring your look from dull and drab winter blues to light, bright and fresh like Spring itself. Shine on everyone!

Bow Down to Big Curls!
Curly girls unite! We love spiraling, winding and twisting locks in any length and the looks above show how curls can rock it out. How do you achieve any of these looks? Each one starts with a great cut by a qualified stylist who knows what all curly girls know - when wet curls are loose and longer, when dry they rise. So before someone goes Edward Scissorhands on your head of hair they have to understand how curls function. As James Joseph stylist CJ Burns explains "curls have to be cut according to curl pattern and should not be combed excessively during the cut because this would disrupt the natural fall of the curls." A killer cut combined with a great hair care regimen including the right shampoo and conditoner and styling produts is key. Some of CJ's favorites include Sojourn moisture shampoo and conditioner, leave in detangler and texture molding paste. Ladies, take our advice and let your curls fly!

BANG!
Sometimes your hair can get stuck in a rut - and sometimes a person's style can get stuck in the 80's. If you want to freshen up your look without making a major change and losing length then we think bangs are the way to go. Not Bruce Springsteen concert tees and denim on denim kind of bangs - sleek and chic bangs like the looks above are what we're going for. This is one trend that hasnt let up since it reemerged in the early 2000s. Bangs are not limited to anyone and are a great look for just about any hair type. It's all about a fresh cut with a talented stylist to make a banging impression.

Hair's to Fashion Week!
What's trending in hair in at New York Fashion week!? Well, we're glad you asked. All over the runways we see wet, slicked back styles as well as loose and lovely ponytails. Take a look below at some of the images fresh from the runways. To achieve either of the looks on your own Director Seth Selman suggests using Bumble and Bumble's Gellac for the slicked back wet look, and Bumble and Bumble's Grooming Cream applied to damp hair before air drying and tying back at the nape of your neck. Both looks, easily replicated at home, add an element of class to any outfit making your look fashion week worthy any and every day!

Up and At Em'
We've all been there. Snoozed our alarm clock too many times, overslept and now have just minutes before we need to be out the door. Sometimes the rush and pressure can bring out our most creative side when it comes to wardrobe - well, the same can be said for hair. Checking out recent looks on one of our favorite blogs Caroline's Mode (http://carolinesmode.com/stockholmstreetstyle/) we loved the undone, all up styles that we think would be easy to recreate at home in just minutes. James Joseph Stylist Julia Boucher says the key products to this look are Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray and Bumble and Bumble Classic hairspray. Just spray a generous amount of Oribe Dry all over at the root to create the volume, tie it back loosely with an elastic, and spray Bumble and Bumble Classic all over to set. In a flash you'll have a runway worthy look that you can take to the streets and conquer your day!
